Review: Unfolding by Jonathan Friesen

Book Description ( provided via booklook bloggers )

Jonah wishes he could get the girl, but he’s an outcast and she’s the most perfect girl he knows. And their futures seemed destined to fork apart: Jonah’s physical condition is debilitating, and epileptic seizures fill his life with frustration. Whereas Stormi is seemingly carefree, and navigates life by sensing things before they happen. And her most recent premonition is urging her to leave town.
When Stormi begs Jonah for help, he finds himself swept into a dark mystery his small town has been keeping for years. And the answers Stormi needs about her own past could possibly destroy everything Jonah has ever known—including his growing relationship with Stormi herself.
Books published under the Blink imprint are intended for a general readership without being overtly Christian.

My Review:

Unfolding was very fascinating. Strange... but still very fascinating. It definitely kept me captivated and held my attention throughout the entire book. Although I did like the story, I feel like sometimes it was just a bit too out there and left too many things just flapping around in the wind without resolution or reason. With that said I did feel like this book had interesting characters that sometimes really carried the story when bits of plot where missing and the story may have otherwise fell flat. The fact that the main character had a physical disability was something different and unique that really set it apart from other fiction books that I have read. The descriptive writing was absolutely one of my favorite things about the story and at times was very poetic and moving. Overall it was a pretty decent read and should appeal to someone craving something different to read.

Excerpt

“Ava, let go of your foot. You’ll hurt your arm.”
She ignored him, swearing in Italian while still holding on to her foot with both hands.
He released an exasperated sigh. “Stubborn as ever,” he muttered as he walked toward her and scooped her into his arms. She might be as stubborn as she used to be, but she was at least thirty pounds lighter. When they were together, she’d been all soft, lush curves. She released a surprised gasp and her arms automatically went around his neck. Beneath the smell of damp wool, he caught a whiff of the same perfume she used to wear—Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue. It brought back memories of all the times he’d held her in his arms. Seven years of memories, most of them amazing.
He set her on the edge of the bed and cleared his throat. “Do you think your foot’s broken?”
She didn’t answer; she looked like she might be in shock. He crouched in front of her to remove her wet shoes. The old Ava wouldn’t have been caught dead wearing shoes like these. She loved heels, the higher the better. Sexy, strappy shoes that were colorful and blinged out. He never could figure out how she walked in them for hours on end without complaining. But damn, he’d loved watching her do it. He should probably be grateful her taste in footwear had changed too.
This pair though…“For Chrissakes, Ava, there’s a hole in the bottom of this shoe, and look at this.” He lifted the other shoe, flicking its flapping sole.
She made a small choking sound, her eyes huge in her flushed face.
He frowned. “What’s wrong with—”
“You…you’re naked.”
He scowled and rose to his feet. “It’s not like you haven’t seen it before,” he grumbled, stalking to the bathroom to retrieve a towel. She was gone by the time he came back.

Such a lovely second chance romance. I have read a few books by Debbie Mason and in my experience they are always equal parts beautiful, fun, and emotional. Starlight Bridge is definitely all of those things and much more. It blends the perfect amount of romance, tension, heartbreak, rivalry, and humor. There's even a meddling ghost! This is definitely not just a fluffy romance. There is true depth and emotion in these pages and I for one just could not get enough!

Ava and Griffin are both wonderful characters and you can't help but to become personally involved in their story, cheering for them to get back together and see through their past difficulties to see that they are meant to be. It just seems so perfect that Griffin helps Ava to overcome her current obstacles while they both work on trying to figure out how to overcome the obstacles from their past. It seems like poor Ava's life just took a dramatic downturn after the events that took place that caused her to ask Griffin for a divorce. So I was beyond thrilled to get to see her be happy again. The twist that is thrown in with Griffin's ex Lexi was a little nerve wracking at first because I thought it was going to keep them apart. But of course I don't want to give too much away.

Overall this is a wonderful read and I would highly recommend it to all fans of romance with great humor and depth.
