Review: Draw 50 Sea Creatures by Lee J. Ames with Erin Harvey

I've always been a visual drawer. I am much better at drawing things when I have a picture or drawing to look at, than trying to draw from an idea in my mind. So being a lover of sea creatures I knew I wanted to give Draw 50 Sea Creatures a try and see what all new interesting things it could help me to draw. I love that it is much more than fish. It also features, the African Penguin, Narwhal, Humpback Whale, Sea Otter, and much more! It was really fun and even my daughter was excited and asked to borrow the book to make some sea creature drawings of her own. I would definitely recommend Draw 50 Sea Creatures and would be interested in finding more of these types of books featuring other things to draw. It would appeal to people of many ages and also would make a great gift.

Review: Sugarplum Way by Debbie Mason

Sugarplum Way (Harmony Harbor, #4)Sugarplum Way by Debbie Mason

I have decided I will read anything Debbie Mason writes! This series has been so wonderful. Sugarplum Way has all of the things I love about the Harmony Harbor series. The characters are fun and likeable, the town feels cozy and familiar, and the story was full of emotion but also some really funny laugh out loud moments as well. I really enjoyed that Aidan and Julia didn't quite get along at first but seem to have this crazy attraction to one another. It made their story really fun and kept things interesting. I felt like I could relate to Julia and I loved how adorable she is. That might be why I think this may have been my favorite of the series so far. But really I feel like each book just gets better and better. The other characters have appearances in this book as well, including my favorite ghost, which keeps everything from being about the will they or won't they. I would definitely recommend anyone interested in this book to read the others in the series first though. Trust me you won't regret it! So to review... I loved it, I highly recommend it, and I need more Harmony Harbor!

Review: Seize Today by Pintip Dunn

Seize Today (Forget Tomorrow, #3)Seize Today by Pintip Dunn

Seize Today is the compelling finale to the Forget Tomorrow Trilogy. I was surprised to find that this is one of those series that I loved each book even more than the last.

Seize Today focuses mostly on Olivia Dresden, the only true precognitive, and also the chairwoman's daughter. While Olivia was in the other books as well, I loved getting to know her better in Seize Today. She may just be my favorite character yet! She is strong yet vulnerable, and is determined to always try to do the right thing, even when she believes she never does. She is so powerful yet feels powerless to save the world even as she desperately tries again and again. Her romance with Ryder is just oh so perfect and had me rooting for them fiercely.

All the dystopian/science fiction aspects of the book were really cool and definitely kept things interesting. Future memory, time travel, and parallel realms, it has it all. I liked that it never got confusing though and that these things were explained naturally and simply, never stalling the flow of the story. I highly recommend the Forget Tomorrow Trilogy to fans of YA dystopian/science fiction romance.

Review: Peace in the Valley by Ruth Logan Herne

Peace in the Valley is such a wonderfully emotional, heartwarming read. It is the third book in the Double S Ranch series but can totally be read as a standalone if you so wish. Just like the other books in this series I loved the atmosphere of the ranch and the overall feeling of faith, family, and community that you get throughout the story. Trey is an interesting character indeed, especially considering how he came to live at Double S Ranch, his past hurts, and his current occupation. The fact that both Trey and Lucy are trying to move on from their past which has also made them wary because of it, makes me instantly feel like they are perfectly suited to help each other grow and heal. This of course also leads to plenty of back and forth and wavering of feelings and intentions but also some fun banter. I also like that I got to see my old friends from the previous books and did anyone else catch the hinted romance between Sam and a certain spunky lady? Loved it! I would definitely like to read more books by this author.

product review: Bic Velocity Mechanical Pencil

Now that school is back in session, a good pencil to write with is a must have item. We ( my daughter and I ) tried out these new Bic Velocity Mechanical Pencils with a 75% wider eraser to see how well they performed. Overall we really liked them. The lead did not break too easily and right away I noticed that the lead made for very smooth writing. I feel like the color of the writing was better than expected and was the exact right shade ( not too dark, not too light ). We both really liked the soft gel grip. It made it feel very comfortable to hold, which is great when you may be writing for an extended period of time. The larger eraser is definitely a nice feature and erases markings very well. With that said, even though the eraser took care of cleanly removing all markings, the indentions in the paper from the lead made the previous writing still noticeably etched into the paper. I think this is to be expected from mechanical pencils though. One thing that I thought was just brilliant was the eraser refills! If you erase a lot it is definitely nice to have that as an option instead of having to just toss the pencil or use a separate eraser.

Review: It Started with Goodbye by Christina June

It Started with GoodbyeNot All Stories Begin With Once Upon A Time

By Christina June
Published by Zondervan

Book Description ( via booklookbloggers.com )

Sixteen-year-old Tatum Elsea is bracing for the worst summer of her life. After being falsely accused of a crime, she’s stuck under stepmother-imposed house arrest and her BFF’s gone ghost. Tatum fills her newfound free time with community service by day and working at her covert graphic design business at night, which includes trading emails with a cute cello-playing client. If Tatum is reading his emails right, her virtual Prince Charming is funny, smart, and talented—and he seems to think the same about her. Too bad he’s spending his summer across the ocean in Ireland…not that Tatum would be allowed to go on a date anyway.
But over the course of the summer, Tatum will learn that sometimes going after what you want means breaking all the rules. And when Tatum discovers she’s not the only one in the house keeping secrets, she finds she has the chance to make amends with her family and friends. Equipped with a new perspective, and assisted by her feisty step-abuela-slash-fairy-godmother, Tatum is ready to start fresh and maybe even get her happy ending along the way. A modern play on the Cinderella story arc, Christina June’s IT STARTED WITH GOODBYE will appeal to fans of Sarah Dessen, Stephanie Perkins, and Jennifer E. Smith.

My review:

I always like modern takes on fairy tales. That is definitely one of the things that interested me in It Started with Goodbye. I would say that it is a very loose take in this case, but still has some similar aspects of Cinderella in a modern day setting. I think it is a very realistic story in regards to choosing to hang out with the wrong people or in the wrong situations can get you into big trouble even if you aren't willingly trying to do anything wrong. Fortunately things turned out pretty well for Tatum in the end. I liked that Tatum starts to see things a bit differently after her experiences and it seems to also push her outside of her comfort zone. I of course also liked the romance in the story and enjoyed the way it all played out. The emails were funny and made me smile. The story is pretty straight forward so it's hard to give details without giving away too much of the story. Everything tied up pretty nicely at the end and even had a happy ending. I would say it was an average read good for a relatively light, quick read.

Review: Desert Wolf by Linda Thomas-Sundstrom

Desert Wolf

Desert Wolf by Linda Thomas-Sundstrom

Desert Wolf was immediately fascinating and kept me thoroughly engrossed all the way through. I really liked the characters and enjoyed getting to know them as I tried to figure out the mysteries surrounding Paxton's Father's will, why she was different, and what was going on with the rogue. There were a few clues as to what the mystery was, but I was never quite sure, which I loved. The impetuous romance between Paxton and Grant was so compelling and while she tried to resist his charms, I was not so obstinate. He charmed me from the very beginning and was one of the best alpha male characters I've read about. He knew that alpha does not always mean domineering, it means doing what's best. Yet he still had that strong, protective thing going on that makes him so tempting. The end of the story got a bit hectic when all the mysteries were coming to light, but altogether I was very happy with the ending and the story overall. I highly recommend Desert Wolf to paranormal romance fans who enjoy a little mystery.

Review: Know Who You Are. Live Like It Matters. A Homeschooler's Interactive Guide to Discovering Your True Identity by Tim Tebow with A.J. Gregory

Know Who You Are. Live Like It Matters.

A Homeschooler's Interactive Guide to Discovering Your True Identity

by Tim Tebow with A. J. Gregory

My review:

I knew right away that I would relate to this book. Not only as someone who was homeschooled for a portion of my own education, but also as a parent who homeschools my child. I like that each weeks lesson starts with a short story of Tim's personal experience then highlights a biblical discussion or verse that coincides and then has a couple of quick questions to get you thinking and relating to the subject. Everything has a really simple, positive, and uplifting vibe meant to help you find yourself in Christ. I think this book will be a great addition to our homeschooling experience.

Excerpt:

Dana leaned down to scoop her phone off the ground. No sooner had she picked it up than it rang. She recognized the number. Her finger trembled when she rejected the call. She should answer and get it over with. It might be something as simple as sending her copies of her divorce papers. But she didn’t believe that was all her lawyer wanted. Because every time she saw his number, the small hairs on the back of her neck stood on end, and she was overcome by a heavy sense of foreboding. Strong fingers closed around her wrist. “Dana, relax. Take slow, even breaths or you’ll hyperventilate. That’s a girl,” Finn said when she did as he suggested, his other hand going to the nape of her neck. He gently massaged the tight muscles there, murmuring his encouragement as she got herself under control. There was no judgment in his voice. Just kindness and concern. She’d heard Finn was well loved and respected by the people he served with Doctors Without Borders. She now had a better understanding why. Leaning against him, she was enveloped by the strength and warmth of his body and the seductive scent of his cologne. “Thank you.” She self-consciously pulled away. “We should probably get going. I have to be back at the manor by two to get organized for the children’s craft session. They’re going to paint flowerpots for their mothers. I was going to use pink tulips but your dog trampled them, so maybe I’ll go with hyacinths. I think there’ll be enough. They’re pretty, and they mean constant love and fertility. That should work, don’t you think?” “I have no idea what you're talking about. And not to be rude, but I really don’t care. What I do care about is who’s trying to contact you. It’s obvious that they frighten you, Dana. Why don’t you let me help?” “No, it’s not what you think. I’m fine, honestly.” “Sure you are, because perfectly fine people have panic attacks when they get a call in the middle of the afternoon, take too many sleeping pills, and wear a disguise. Come on, what do you take me for? At least do me the courtesy of being honest.” All she could do was blink up at him, the warm feelings of moments ago shriveling up in response to his Arctic-cold words. She’d been right the day she met him. He probably did have a God complex. He might be ten years younger than her ex-husband, but he was just as sanctimonious and judgmental. .

My Review

Primrose Lane is a fun, touching, and funny addition to the Harmony Harbor series. I was glad to get to see my old friends from Mistletoe Cottage, including my favorite ghost, plus get to know some of the others better.

Dana ( aka Olivia ) has secrets. We got hints about her not being who she said she was and hiding from something in the first book, but I was really happy to get to hear her story in Primrose Lane. I've always loved stories where the main love interests don't always see eye to eye and at times don't really like each other at all. That is definitely the case with Finn and Olivia, which of course makes for some fun banter, that I adore.

Debbie Mason has a way to add some real depth to her romance novels. She expertly weaves the characters serious problems they are facing in their life with their new romance and it just works out so perfectly. You really get a feel for these characters and what they are going through, but also get to be happy for them and the love they are so deserving of finally finding.

I thought some of the predicaments Olivia found herself in were pretty hilarious ( the crab and swans lol ). I love the humor, romance, and devotion in Primrose Lane, and highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars!
